Promoting Safer Products, Inspiring Trust

At UL, working toward a safer world means paying close attention to all aspects of safety, for all products and potential users. Safe products benefit the entire market by protecting brand integrity, reinforcing consumer trust and providing peace of mind.

To accomplish this goal, UL engineers and technicians remain up-to-date on the latest standards and industry developments. This expertise allows us to help our customers align their products with the most applicable standards while reducing time to market. When standards are updated, it is critical for companies to understand these changes and ensure their products remain compliant.

Updates to IEC 60335-1 Affects the Global Appliance Market

The latest version of the IEC 60335-1 standard, version 5.2, was published on May 2016 and replaces version 5.1. The standard is already applicable and affects the majority of residential appliances.

Middle East countries covered by the Gulf Mark (G Mark) have helped speed the transition process by adopting this latest version. The forecast date for mandatory enforcement of the standard in G Mark countries is May 2017, one year after its publication.

In countries covered by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), the update to IEC 60335-1 5.2 was ratified in June 2016, while publication of the standard is expected in 2017.

UL Can Help Ease the Transition

These changes mean appliance manufacturers and products certified according to the previous version of the standard will soon need to be compliant with these updated requirements. As additional countries/regions adopt IEC 60335-1 5.2, updated product certificates must be produced in a timely manner.

To help you continue making safe products under this updated standard, UL created a fast, simple and convenient process, allowing you to request updated certificates today. Our services can help manufacturers update their products and related CB certificates in advance of mandatory implementation, saving time and reducing the likelihood of delays.
